How To Start A Blog For Beginners [Part 1]
Wondering how to start a blog? If you are a newbie blogger and looking for tips on how to create a blog, this article will provide the basics on how to start a blog for beginners. You will learn which blogging platforms to use, how to choose a blog topic and how often to blog!
I started my first blog back in the early 2000′s and while there are still some things I haven’t mastered, I do know quite a bit about blogging. Check out this question I was recently asked about creating a blog:
How To Start A Blog – Choosing a blogging platform
Let’s first start with the matter of creating the blog.
There’s a lot of time and energy that goes into running an established blog. And even more time if you want to monetize it! My first suggestion is to be confident that blogging is what you want to do. I ran my entertainment blog on the Blogger format for many years. I switched over to WordPress when I started this blog and decided I’d had enough of blogging for free. Many of the bigger more established blogs were on the WordPress format and they had more control over the way their blog looked and the functionality of it. WordPress allowed them more opportunities to monetize their site and they were making money from their blogs!
Now I’ll be the first to admit it’s been a while since I’ve looked at the Blogger format so they may have updated their functionality. This was years ago when I made the switch, but I find WordPress to better suit my needs. I’ve found it to be easy to use and more importantly easy to set up. Wordpress’ extensive plug-ins and endless templates allow you to have a traditional looking blog or one that resembles a static website. WordPress plug-ins gives you the ability to publish posts to your social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest or greet new readers with customized messages.
Seriously, there’s a plug-in for practically everything!
Step one is choosing your blogging format. Check out both of the aforementioned blogging formats and choose the best one for you.
How To Start A Blog – Choosing a blog topic
Remember when you were in school and you had to write a paper and you hated the topic? No matter how hard you tried to form words, thoughts, or complete sentences you couldn’t because you just didn’t care about the topic. Think about that when deciding what to blog about.
If it’s not something you absolutely love, your blog will eventually go dormant because it will be painful to write about something you’re not passionate about several times a week! I love what I blog about, but there are days when I feel like I’ve exhausted a subject, then I’ll come across a question like the one posed above and be right back at it.
I guess what I’m saying is… because of the nature of blogs, your readers will know when your heart and soul isn’t into it and that will definitely hinder your success. So set your blog up for success by blogging about what you love the most.
Step two; choose a topic you’re passionate about.
How To Create A Blog - How often should you blog?
There are so many different opinions on if you should blog every day or once a week. There was a time when I felt I needed to blog (x) amount of times per week. My new rule of thumb is, how engaged are you with your blog? If you aren’t engaged, neither are your readers. Engagement can be measured in two ways, by the traffic to your site and by your interest in blogging on any given day.
Step three; decide how often you will blog.
In How To Start A Blog For Beginners [Part 2] we’ll discuss: branding your blog, formatting a blog, adding pictures to your blog, and when to publish your blog posts.
