When two creative people live together
I have to say the last few weeks have been quite interesting. While writing and editing my newest book Marketing and Publicity for the author, my teenage son who’s a music producer has been producing tracks for submission to a few recording artists.
I think I’ve already blogged about my creative process and if I haven’t…let me clue you in.
For as long as I can remember I’ve found it very difficult to write when there’s noise. I prefer my surroundings be absolutely quiet when I write, so this usually means cutting the TV and the Blackberry off or anything that will distract me.
So imagine the last few weeks while my son played the same bass heavy hip-hop tracks over and OVER and over AGAIN.
From ten in the morning until ten at night, I would hear the same songs at varying volumes on repeat.
Now granted, he’d be in the basement and I’d be on the third level, but I could hear the songs as if he were sitting in the room with me. Part of me wanted to scream, “Cut the music down, I’m writing!” And at times I said just that! But for the most part, I had to work through it because he, like I, was in a creative zone. As a published songwriter, though I haven’t written a song in a while, I understand his process. I understand he has to feel the music as much as I need to feel the words I’m writing.
Eventually we found our balance. And in a few weeks, he’ll be going back to school and we’ll be back to our usual writing/producing dynamic. This was one of the few times I was forced to write outside of my comfort zone. While it was quite uncomfortable, I’m proud to say I was able to do it
Do you live with someone who’s creative as well? What’s the dynamic like? If not, how does your family deal with your writing time? Have you had to write outside of your comfort zone? Please share in the comment section below.

This is very hard to do, though as you proved, not impossible.
Definitely not an ideal situation…
